Type 2 diabetes, half marathon and 2016 goals! 


So, no big deal, ran my THIRD half marathon this past Saturday!!!! One goal for 2016 was to run at least three half marathons. The reason I made this goal was to become more comfortable running this distance.  Last year I had made a goal to do my first 70.3 half ironman, which unfortunately did not happen. My mom passed away and I lost all focus. I gained 30lbs and stopped training. 

At the end of November 2015 I went to see my doctor for my annual checkup.  I received a message from my doctor asking me to come in to review bloodwork. I knew something major must have come up on my results. The soonest I could get in was four weeks, I asked the nurse if it was ok to wait and she said yes. That made me feel better but I was still concerned.  At the end of December I got sick and had to go into the doctor. During this walkin “sick” visit she told me my bloodwork results. I had type 2 diabetes!!

I was shocked! But always knew this could happen. A majority of my family is diabetic. I knew if I gained weight it put me at higher risk. Now my worse fear came true. I cried. Cursed all the donuts and chocolate I had recently eaten.  But I knew this is a serious disease, and on that day I made a choice to change my life for the better. 

First big change was my diet! My doctor told me to stop eating bread, pasta, white rice and potato immediately. She told me to drink more water and stay away from fruit juice. And stay away from sweets! She told me that I can eat brown rice and sweet potato.  From the moment I was told to change my diet I accepted this challenge! 

Since I’ve made the changes I have lost some weight, a little over 30lbs!!! And made another goal for 2016, to continue eating healthy and lose more weight. I hope to lose another 30lbs to finally be at a healthy weight for my size! For reference I’m only 5’1. With the progress I’ve made this year thus far I know I will get to this goal! I’m trying to lose weight at a nice slow pace, no rush. 

When I found out I had type 2 diabetes my A1c was 6.5 and since I lost weight and changed my diet I have brought down my A1c to 5.5!!!! Which is back in the normal range! I’m not on any medication, yay hopefully I can stay this way, and if I continue on my healthy path I should be able to keep it at bay! I check my blood glucose every morning when I wake up before eating. I do this to stay on top of my diabetes and hope that it continues to stay in the normal range. 

So my last goal for 2016 is to be consistently active! What I mean is workout at least three times a week, every week. Since I started ClassPass this has made it so easy to stay active. So many choices on fitness studios to attend I won’t get bored and won’t have a reason to not attend!

  2. Be active at least three days a week
  3. Lose weight
  4. Run in three half marathons
